Hamburg Metropolitan Region – Multifunctional location information system MUSIS

IHK-MUSIS, which dates from 2007, is an interregional location information system that can display the economic structures of the Metropolitan Region in visual terms, as well as large areas of North Germany. The system, originally conceived for Hamburg by the Hamburg chamber of commerce (IHK), was extended to the chamber administrative districts of Flensburg, Kiel, Lübeck, Lüneburg/Wolfsburg, Oldenburg, Schwerin and Stade.

The system is based on corporate data held by chambers of industry and commerce, which details the name under which the company trades, the sector, the size range of workforce and the addresses of about 300,000 member companies of the chambers. New software links this data with the digital maps of the land surveying offices which are accessible via an Internet geoportal. The system supplies finely detailed images of locations in a user-defined scale, which can depict corporate density for individual roads, an urban district or a whole region. Individual industrial sectors can also be selected, as well as size range of companies.

Member companies can call up the individually created location images at chambers of industry and commerce. Interested parties simply contact their local chamber of industry and commerce, where they will be advised by expert staff. Searches can be done by sector, which gives information about local gaps in supply or the existence of tough competition. Information about economic structure available from IHK-MUSIS also underpins location marketing efforts at state, district or local level, as well as Hamburg Metropolitan Region as a whole.
