In addition to basic research into oceans, climate and shipbuilding, the Max Planck institutes enjoy a global reputation, as do GKSS research centre for material and coastal research in Geesthacht, and Bernard Nocht Institute for tropical medicine in Hamburg. Borstel research centre, the Leibniz centre for medicine and life sciences, undertakes valuable work into finding causes and treatment in pulmonology, or respiratory disease. Competence in science and research known the world over is centred in the Fraunhofer institutions for silicon technologies in Itzehoe and for marine biotechnology in Lübeck, as well as DESY, the German electron synchrotron, that is one of the world’s leading centres of research into particle and photon physics.
