Shopping becomes entertainment here. Famous designers’ exclusive showrooms, traditional fashion stores and the new Europa Passage shopping temple, all invite you to window-shop and gaze, try on and buy.
Shopping and recreation: almost one and the same thing in the Metropolitan Region. Apart from the cosmopolitan big-city atmosphere of Hamburg, the historic, picturesque old town of Lüneburg is also great for a shopping trip – the medieval atmosphere combined with a cross-section of traditional chain stores and boutiques with an individual approach is irresistible. Or go window-shopping in the pretty lanes and alleys of the old part of 1,000-year-old Stade, then sip a coffee by the idyllic harbour in the centre of town.
Hamburg is also the unrivalled capital for gourmets. Sprinkled with Michelin stars or simply inexpensive and good – the choice is yours in Hamburg and the region.
But it is especially away from the famous starred restaurants, out in the region, that there are so many culinary treats waiting to be discovered. Try eating fish near where it’s landed: the charming fishing ports of the Metropolitan Region offer freshly caught enjoyment in their fish restaurants. Driving overland offers opportunities to stop and sample delicious cakes and tortes in one of the traditional cafés in the country. On the way it is always worth stopping at one of the region’s many farm shops: you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables direct from the farmer.
Those who like hearty food seek out the cabbage season opening in September in Dithmarschen district, the most northerly part of the Metropolitan Region. Europe’s largest area of cabbage-growing harvests around 80 million cabbages a year. Reason enough for six days of games and fun, information and entertainment, art and culture – and most of all, delicious food.
